Started a Root Canal? What to do in-between appointments...

So you have started a root canal, you’ve booked your next few RCT appointments so there is not much to do now. But what do you need to know about in between these appointments?

When a root canal is started its either because of an infection that will kill the tooth off or because the tooth has already died off, unfortunately these things just happen expectantly. Once the Root Canal has been started the pulp of the tooth is removed and replaced with antibiotics inside the tooth and them a temporary filling is placed in the access hole.

Because this temporary filling is like its name - Temporary - there are a few things you need to know.

  1. Do not eat anything hard or overly chewy/sticky, anything that might pull the temporary filling out.

  2. Once The Pulp Chamber infection is removed the tooth becomes brittle so no eating anything that could crack or fracture the tooth!!

  3. If the temporary filling falls out call us immediately!! Once exposed anything can go into the access hole like food and bacteria that can undo the work done by the antibiotics and dentist and the first appointment will need to be redone.

  4. Mostly just be careful. If the tooth cracks or fractures vertically there may be no saving the tooth so the root canal may be wasted.

After a Root Canal treatment we highly recommend crowning the tooth to prevent cracks and fractures of the brittle tooth and to protect the tooth’s future.
